Plains Game Overview

A Classic Safari—Built Around Variety

Plains game is the most flexible way to hunt Africa. Come in with a focused wish list, or keep it open and let the day unfold with your PH—reading conditions, glassing, and making smart decisions in real time.

What makes it different

Built for groups, built for options.

Plains game lets everyone stay involved—whether you’re hunting hard, spectating, filming, or waiting for the right animal to show. It’s the best “first safari” format and it still hits for serious trophy goals.

Easy to Plan
Arrive with a short target list so we can structure days and budget efficiently.
Flexible
Nothing is locked in—adjust priorities once you’re seeing animals in the field.

Location & terrain

Limpopo variety in one safari.

Open savanna, rocky hills, thick acacia, and river edges—so a single day can shift from long glassing to tight-footed stalking depending on weather, movement, and what’s showing.

Good to know: You’ll see the land first-hand, then we fine-tune the plan around what’s happening that week.

Weapons welcome

Your weapon. Your skill set.

Rifle, handgun, compound bow, traditional bow, crossbow, or muzzleloader—we tailor the hunt to what you shoot well and what you’re confident with, not a preset package or rigid system.

Great fit for

First safari to repeat hunters.

  • First-time Africa hunters
  • Couples & small groups
  • Hunters building a species list
  • Returning safari hunters
Planning tip
Send us your target list before you arrive so we can map out days and budget. Then adjust freely once you’re seeing animals in person.

What to Expect

How a Plains Game Safari Unfolds

Plains game hunts aren’t run on a rigid schedule. Some days are built around waterholes chosen in advance. Other days are about covering country, glassing, and moving on foot when the right opportunity shows. We pick the approach that fits your goals and the conditions that day.

01 The Plan

Start With Your Priorities

We build a plan around your species list, weapon choice, skill level, group size, filming priorities, and the pace you want. That plan gives us direction—then we refine it as the week unfolds.

02 Setups

Set the Day’s Strategy

If we’re hunting waterholes, those sits are selected in advance based on animal movement, season, and conditions. If we’re hunting spot-and-stalk, we choose areas that give us the best visibility and wind for finding and closing on animals.

03 Locate

Cover Ground & Evaluate Animals

Open savanna, rocky hills, thick acacia, and river edges each demand a different approach. Some hunts involve covering ground by pickup truck (often called a bakkie in Africa) to locate animals, others begin from elevated vantage points to glass before moving in on foot.

04 Close In

Stalk, Settle, and Take the Shot

When the right animal is located, we set up for the cleanest, most ethical shot your weapon allows—using terrain, wind, and distance to your advantage. Some opportunities happen fast. Others take patience. We don’t force it.

05 After

Photos, Field Care & Trophy Handling

After the shot, the animal is handled immediately and professionally. Trophy photos are taken first, followed by proper field care to protect cape and meat quality. From there, game is prepared according to the hunter’s trophy plans—whether that means dip & pack for export or taxidermy completed in Africa.

Good to know: Come with a short target list so we can plan efficiently—then stay flexible. Plains game is at its best when we can adjust to what the animals and conditions give us.

Planning Your Hunt

Seasonality & Timing

When it’s summer in the U.S., it’s winter in South Africa — and that’s exactly why our plains game season hunts so well in Limpopo.

Our Guiding Window

We travel to South Africa to guide our clients primarily in June and July, with limited availability into early August depending on conditions and schedules.

Mornings Mid-30s to mid-40s °F
Midday 60s to low 70s °F
Heads up: Temperatures vary by day — layer up early, shed layers late morning.
Best clothing strategy
Light layers + a warm outer in the mornings.
Pace advantage
Cooler days = comfortable hunting hours.

Why Winter Works

Winter conditions in Limpopo tend to favor visibility, movement, and consistent hunting days — especially for spot-and-stalk.

  • Reduced vegetation improves visibility in thicker country.
  • Cool temperatures make long days in the field more comfortable.
  • Animal movement is often more predictable in winter patterns.
Planning tip
Lock your dates first, then send us your short target list and your must-haves. We’ll confirm logistics, help you pack smart, and set expectations so you arrive ready.
